Suminoe oyster - Keep an eye out for this invasive pest

The Suminoe oyster (or Chinese river oyster) has been detected for the first time in Australia at Bribie Island and Brisbane locations - Kedron Brook and Boggy Creek, Pinkenba, near the mouth of the Brisbane River.

This marine pest attaches to submerged and floating infrastructure including pylons, pontoons and boats and can occupy shallow waters as well as muddy creeks. It competes with native species for space and may carry exotic diseases and parasites.

Boat owners are urged to check, clean and dry equipment to prevent its spread to new areas.

If you suspect Suminoe oyster, record the location, take a photo if safe to do so, and report it to Biosecurity Queensland by phoning 13 25 23.
