After the success of the Tasar World Championship in Melbourne, Porthpean Sailing Club is looking forward to hosting the UK fleet for their National Championship at the end of June.
This year marks the 40th year that Tasars have been sailed at this Cornish club, the first arrival was Tasar 1274 which was purchased by Dennis & Heather Bray from Weirwood Sailing Club in 1984.
Upon the first arrival of the Tasar at the club there was a renewed injection of enthusiasm, still the old guard being sceptical about whether this Aussie designed craft would stand the test of time. The Tasar with its lightweight hull, fully battened mainsail and rotating mast was a world apart from the more traditional classes that were being sailed in the club at around that time.
It didn't take long for talk to start spreading around the county about this new exciting class of boat and many sailors visited to have a sail. The following year there was an explosion of Tasars and it quickly became the biggest class at the club, with many good sailors racing in them. For many years afterwards this was the case and the club hosted a successful national championship in 1991.
The mid nineties saw a bit of a decline in the class as some sailors had their heads turned by the the many new classes being launched at that time, although the fleet was still very active and a big part of the club.
Last year the club saw a resurgence in the class once again, not just at Porthpean but on the East Coast and in Scotland with some enthusiastic new sailors.
The Tasar still continues to be a big part of Porthpean and we welcome the fleet back for their national championship since their last visit in 2017.
