Tomorrow we remember
by Alvey Reels 10 Nov 2023 04:26 UTC
This Saturday is a day for all Australians to look back at our history and remember the suffering our people endured fighting for the wonderful quality of life we all enjoy today.
It's an extra special day for Alvey.
During WWII, our factory was tasked with making components for landing barges and the Bofors gun. We still have the wooden crates as a reminder.
Our factory was managed by Ben Perkins who completed his apprenticeship at Alvey before joining the army where he became one of the famous Rats of Tobruk during the war. After the war was over, Ben came back to work for Alvey.
Here is a beautiful poem written by Ken Alvey in salute of Ben and the others who left their families behind and risked everything.
After the war, we had many European immigrants come to work at Alvey. One of the most loved was Denny, a 15 year old Italian boy who was one of the most respected and hardest working staff we've ever had in our 103 years in business.
Denny would work tirelessly moulding bakelite spools used by anglers all over the country. You might even have one of his reels in your collection.
We ask that this Remembrance Day, we all take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made to ensure the peace and prosperity afforded to the people of this country.
We'll be dedicating our next catch to those who didn't return.
Lest we forget.
