Burnham Week 2023 Round Up

A very successful Burnham Week concluded with Trophy Day.

Thirteen boats raced for the prestigious Town Cup which again had the EAORA race for the Houghton Cup within it. David Evans, a long-time supporter of Burnham Week, won in his Hustler 32, Hullabaloo XV. Although a later finish this year than recently David and his crew did the traditional parade of Clubs with the trophy. The Houghton a cup which is the oldest offshore trophy on the East Coast was won by Oystercatcher XXXV owned by Richard Matthews.

For Class One midweek overall the Gaydon Cup was won by Lizzie Brown in Slipstream with Jeannie, John Saunders winning the Fred Smith Cup for runner up.

Lizzie Brown won the Claret Jug for best performance in Class Two and also the Burnham Week adjudicated Peter Jennings.

In Class Five Stiletto, Scot Yeates, won the Penrose Fitzgerald Trophy and the Commodore's Cup. He had sailed round from West Mersea to take part and we were delighted to welcome him. Stiletto had not raced in a Burnham Week since it was owned by Chris Petrie in early 2000s.

In Class Six Eclipse, Daryl Mylroie, won the midweek taking the Claxton Jug, with JodeAnni, Danielle Southey, taking the Pat Gray Shield for Runner Up. Lucy Lee owned by Ian Keam George won the Roach Trophy for the Saturday race. Class Six was a hugely competitive class all week and it was excellent to see so many boats out racing. Ian Keam George in Lucy Lee won the Ted Heath Trophy for best performance in Class 6.

The Elites were back out for Trophy Day and Bill Blank in Blind Squirrel won the Debenhams Trophy.

In the Dragon fleet, Peter Marchant sailing Beauty and the Beast won the Valhalla Cup for the Midweek points and Ian Gray took the win on Saturday to claim the Daily Telegraph Trophy in Still Crazy. The Sidney Sabin Cup for the week points was won by Peter Marchant in Beauty and the Beast with Ian Gray in Still Crazy taking the Runners Up trophy, the Kaiserlicher Cup.

In the large Squib fleet, Mickey Wright in Spoof won the Paul Tucker Tiller for the midweek and also the Burnham Week Bowl for the final Saturday. He also won the Sonny Cole Salver for the weeks points with the runners up trophy going to Malcolm Hutchings in Lady Penelope.

The RCOD midweek points for the HVL Hall Challenge Cup was won by Nick Bacon in Corella. Coralie owned by Sue Law won on Saturday to claim the Bar Yacht Club Trophy. Nick Bacon won the Best Performance for day boats run across all day boat classes, the Helmsman's Trophy in Corella.

The RBOD fleet Wilson Sanderson Memorial Trophy was won by Stephen Herring in Red Jacket. The final Saturday trophy, the Lards Cup, was won by Mandarin owned by Will Dallimore. The weeks points trophy was won by Red Jacket.

The ECODs had six out on the final race and Wizard, Dave Smith won. He also took the midweek points for the Wylie Paterson Trophy. David Smith also won the weeks points, the ECOD 1912 Salver.

In the dinghies the Bournemouth Centenary Trophy for Phantoms was won by Gromit, Chris Roberts. The JJeremy Rogers Trophy was won by Matthew Pickett in the Laser fleet. Fast Handicap for the Contessa Salver was won by Jo Tribe and Nathan Flynn in Slow Handicap won the Skeetex Trophy.

As organisers turn their minds to next year. The competitors enjoyed some great racing which was very close and some excellent courses.
