Team T-Zero finishes first in Tri-State Canyon Shootout

by Sport Fishing Championship 28 Jul 2023 22:04 UTC

Sport Fishing Championship (SFC), the governing body of saltwater tournament fishing, announced the results for the Tri-State Canyon Shootout. Team T-Zero won the competition, which was held in Block Island, Rhode Island.

Team T-Zero landed two blue marlin and three white marlin to take first place, earning them 3,000 points on the SFC leaderboard. They caught their first blue marlin within the first twenty minutes of the tournament, not only putting themselves up early but earning an extra 100 points for catching the first blue of the event. They saw their second blue marlin with 25 minutes left to go on their second day of fishing, landing it with only 10 minutes left.

"This is actually our first time ever getting first place in any tournament we've ever fished," said Team T-Zero Captain Seth Laws. "It feels really good with all the hard work we've put in over the years, and we're going to keep grinding at it. We started the tournament on a really good high and feeling really, really good. And luckily enough we were able to hook the last blue marlin and land it and we ended up in the breakwater with ten minutes to spare."

This week's win by Team T-Zero puts them in second place, with 5,500 points, for SFC's Atlantic Division title, behind Team Polarizer. The Atlantic Division Championship event will be held at the White Marlin Open in Maryland starting on August 7.

Team Gypsea finished in second place, with two blue marlin catches and one white marlin.

One of the season's final tournaments will kick off on Thursday, August 4, in South Padre Island, Texas for the Texas International Fishing Tournament, where the Gulf Division Champion team will be recognized and awarded.

SFC tournament points accrue based on a team's placement in the final tournament standings, with the first-place team earning 3,500 points, the second-place team 3,000 points, and so forth. Placements in the tournament standings are determined from tournament-only points based on species of fish caught and released, with the highest consideration given to blue marlin, then white marlin and spearfish, and finally sailfish and swordfish.

To close the season out, the final two tournaments will be the White Marlin Open in Ocean City, Maryland, from August 7-11, and the San Juan International Billfish Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico, August 23-25.
