RYA North West Junior Travellers Trophy at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club

by Bass Press 17 Jul 2023 13:07 UTC 15-16 July 2023

51 youth teams headed to Bassenthwaite Sailing Club for round seven of the RYA NW Junior Travellers Trophy. The south westerly forecast didn't disappoint, with strong shifty windy blowing over Sale Fell and onto the race course.

Rescue crews were busy from the outset, with some of the younger helms finding the blast to the start line too much. Red Seal Rescue, friends from Ullswater YC and Bass volunteers kept everyone safe, delivering boats and sailors safely back to shore. At this point we must thank the parents in waders helping to launch and catch! A useful addition to adult racing?

Whilst some found the conditions too much, other youth sailors excelled in the strong conditions, enjoying blasting off wind legs and snakes and ladders beats. PROs Phil and Naomi Smith, supported by Helen Yull and William Carruthers on the Bates, set good courses with all important quick turn arounds in-between races, and when necessary made the right calls when the conditions proved too much for the majority.

Sailing an RS Feva, counting five points from five races, Max Rawlinson and Edie Johnson from Roa Island Boating Club were clear winners. Counting nine points, Oliver Hirst from Scammonden Water Sailing Club was second overall and first ILCA. George Jacobs from Combs Sailing Club was third overall and first BYTE CI.

Down the fleet there were some notable performances. Tristan Shaw from Budworth was 7th overall and first Topper. Alex Welfare from Leigh and Lowton was 8th overall and first Opi and Cameron Somerville in a Laser 4.7 was first Bass helm finishing 10th overall.
