Hartley Boats Supernova National Championship at Paignton Sailing Club - Day 1

by Chris Hawley 30 Jun 2023 17:14 UTC 30 June - 2 July 2023

Paignton certainly delivered for the first day of the Hartley Boats Supernova National Championship - a solid 17 to 20+ knot offshore breeze and three well run races.

The 94 competitors had a tough day battling the slight chop and fresh gusts and there was great competition all the way through this strong fleet. Strava clocked 20 miles travelled and time on the water just under 5 hours.

A snapshot from on the water

In the end it was 3 bullets for 2021 National Champion Alistair Goodwin, followed with 3 seconds for 2018 National Champion Sam Knight. Multiple National Champion Cliff Milliner took two thirds, with Eden Hyland taking the other one.

It's wide open overall and with the Silver Fleet and Bronze fleet (as well as the usual age related) there's something for everyone to aim for.

The fleet are retiring now to the club for the Commodores dinner and reception. I'm sure there will be plenty of war stories shared amongst friends in the bar tonight.

With 4 races planned for tomorrow in a similar breeze, we will all be hoping the lighter forecast on Sunday comes good.

The Supernova is a fantastic one design boat that gets great turnouts at events like this, in part due to the friendly nature of the sailors.
