Hook, Line and Sinker Tackle in Santa Barbara, with support from The Sportfishing Conservancy, kicked off the inaugural High School fishing competition this past weekend.
The competition pitted SB county high school fishing clubs against each other in a run and gun competition. Students from each school also went head to head with kids from other schools. There will be awards (and bragging rights) for the prevailing HS team and Hook, Line and Sinker will also award gift certificates for the highest scoring school.
Kids enter through their club and scores count for both the individual and for the school. Scoring was done on fresh and salt water on the total variety of species taken, with bonus points for schools with smaller clubs.
The competition was designed to get kids and schools more engaged in the outdoors and recognition for their prowess. The Sportfishing Conservancy is proud to be a part of this and will continue to help with scholarships and mentoring on "best practices" for recreational fishing. Results are being compiled as we go to press.
Our hats are off to Ben Miller of Hook, line and Sinker Tackle and his family for his awesome leadership getting this big undertaking off the ground and running. A nod also goes to Patrick Friedman for his helping out with social media promotion and recognition. We're looking forward to the next installment including winners and dates for the fall event, so stay tuned!
