by Jessica Offenberger 21 Mar 2023 16:38 UTC

The 2023 Newport Harbor to Cabo San Lucas race results are in and Liz and Dave Moore's Santa Cruz 52 Westerly representing New York Yacht Club and Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club is 1st in ORR class E and 2nd overall ORR corrected time monohull.

First overall is RP 52 Vitesse owned by San Francisco Yacht Club member Thomas Furlong with a corrected time a mere 24 seconds ahead of Westerly. Third overall is Pyewacket (Andrews 68) owned by Roy Disney from San Diego Yacht Club. A total of 28 Monohull racing sailboats entered the 800 mile Cabo Race 2023.

Westerly is a 24 year old optimized Santa Cruz 52; hull number 20 of 28 originally commissioned for St Francis Yacht Club member Chuck Jacobson. Westerly's results demonstrate that an impeccably designed, built and prepared racer-cruiser is performance relevant in an age of single purpose, short life-cycle race boats. Westerly's optimization team consists of Greg Stewart of Nelson-Marek Yacht Design, Kevin Miller from North Sails Channel Islands and Project Manager Patrick O'Brien from International Yacht Services. Westerly's build team is lead by Nacho Serna at Windward Yacht Center in Marina Del Rey, California.

Next up in 2023 is the 52nd biennial running of the Los Angeles to Honolulu Transpacific Yacht Race, known as the Transpac. The first edition of this race was run in 1906 and it is one of the longest and oldest among the world's classic ocean races, with a start line at Point Fermin in San Pedro and the finish line lying 2,220 miles away at Diamond Head in Honolulu.
