Tips to help rebuild Spanish mackerel stocks

Fishing in southern Queensland during the Spanish mackerel closure? There are a few things you can do to fish with the future in mind and help rebuild stocks:

  • Avoid fishing mackerel grounds where possible?
  • Do not fish with wire trace - use mono only and circle hooks where possible?
  • Cut the leader on mackerel for an easy release?
  • Why not give another species a go - our fish aggregating devices (FADs) have seen great catches of mahi mahi

The southern Spanish mackerel closure applies in waters south of 22°S latitude (located slightly north of Stanage Bay). Download the Qld Fishing 2.0 app from Google or Apple app stores for more information.
