Viking 90 - Topping it off

by Viking Yachts 20 Oct 2022 15:38 UTC

Production of hull No. 1 of our new flagship - the Viking 90 - is humming right along, as our shipwrights work with great focus and attention to detail to bring you the next generation of our largest sportfishing yacht.

Our latest build-process video highlighted the installation of mechanical and electrical components, interior living units and the transport and securing of the deckhouse.

This Viking View focuses on the production of the enclosed bridge. The first three Viking 90s will be Sky Bridge models, featuring an enclosed bridge complete with its own climate-controlled salon and forward control station and topped by an open sky bridge.

Above: After being pulled from its mold, the enclosed bridge of hull No. 1 is flipped in our Fiberglass Department, Viglass, and final details are carried out. Like many parts in the 90, the EB is built with specific materials to minimize weight and maximize strength, including carbon fiber.

One of the keys to efficient boatbuilding is to assemble as many interior components as possible on the manufacturing floor.

Above: Using a replication of the 90 deckhouse top, boatbuilders position the pre-assembled enclosed bridge's forward control station, lower cabinetry and forward framework. The resin-infused helm features a newly styled raised black Ultraleather wraparound electronics pod (with integrated visor) that can hold five multi-function displays.

With the helm and framework in place, the enclosed bridge will now be lowered onto the platform. Shipwrights will then fit and install the helm inside the enclosure.

Next up: installation of the windshield and side windows.

Above: A team of shipwrights, led by Foreman Al Capriotti (red shirt), utilize a special device (a POWR-GRIP Vacuum Lifter) to position the single-piece forward windshield. The one-piece mullion-less windshield offers uninhibited sightlines.

With the helm in place, the enclosed bridge is then lifted from the platform and transported via overhead electric hoists down Line 1 to the 90 deckhouse.

Before the EB is lowered into position, shipwrights have already transported many of the salon's interior units. The EB is secured to the deckhouse with bolts, and methacrylate adhesive then further reinforced with fiberglass tabbing on the inside.

We leave you with this shot of the skybridge being dry fitted, ensuring the installation will be precise. Stayed tuned as we continue to follow the build of our new flagship, which will make its world premiere at the Viking Yachts and Valhalla Boatworks VIP event, Feb. 3-4, followed by its public debut at the Miami International Boat Show, Feb. 15-19.
