On Saturday 17th September, Gurnard Sailing Club hosted the second leg of the IW Youth and Junior Dinghy Championship. Three races were held through the afternoon over high tide in Gurnard Bay.
There were 35 entries across the ILCA and Tera fleets with sailors visiting from Yarmouth, Royal Victoria and Brading Haven Yacht Clubs. A shifty northerly wind and building cross tide proved a bit of a challenge for Race Officer Mark Harrison but he successfully got the fleets away for three close races.
Thomas Leather took 3 firsts in a diminished ILCA 6 fleet. In the ILCA 4's Will Bradley had a clean sweep of firsts to take first overall ahead of Tetiana Fedorenko and Tom Yates. Oliver Smith was first in the Tera Pros with 3 race wins ahead of Bea Wishaw and Isla Preston.
It was tight at the top in the Tera Sports with Samuel Leather, Cass Day and Rafe Bradley all winning a race however Cass' consistency gave him first overall ahead of Samuel then Rafe. In the 16 strong Regatta fleet Fallon day clinched first overall with two race wins ahead of Jack Harrison and Harry O'Callaghan.
Following a sit-down meal for the sailors, prizes kindly donated by Musto were presented to the podium places for each fleet plus also Aether Marshall, Aurbrey Carter and Rupert Willard received awards for perseverance and determination on the race course. Rafferty Moore was also presented with a cork for forgetting his bung.
Gurnard Sailing Club is a volunteer run club. Many thanks therefore, go to all the volunteers for helping in the lead up to the event and on the day to make it a great success.
