Tasmanian Fishing Report 24 August 2022 - Plenty of fish despite the cold

The season continues to fish extremely well even with trying weather conditions. The same can be said for the salt, with persistent anglers rewarded.

Freshwater

• Penstock: Fishing has been fairly good in both the shallows and the deeper areas of the lake. Both boat anglers and shore based have been productive. Mostly Brown Trout have been caught.

• Little Pine Lagoon: Fishing has been fantastic around the flooded margins. The fish have not been too fussy about fly choice. A lightly weighted wooly bugger or wooly worm is a popular choice.

• Bronte, Brady's and Binney: The chain has still been producing good numbers of both Rainbow and Brown Trout. The Rainbow Trout have been reported to be full of small rocks. Trolling, Spinning and fly have been working well.

• Woods: Has been fishing well if you can get through the weed, drift spinning has been very productive with decent sized fish being caught over the last week. Trolling has been hard with the weed levels. Lucky Craft Flash Minnows have been a go to due to their shallow running nature.

• Derwent River: Good Searun Trout have been caught over the last week from around Lindisfarne and upstream. All forms of fishing have been good. The standout lure for a few has been the Brown Trout Lucky Craft Flash Minnow.

• Arthurs Lake: Spinning lures and working plastics in amongst the trees has been going well with some decent fish caught. Berkley power minnows in pumpkinseed have been a standout.

• Leake and Tooms Lake: Both lakes have been not been fishing well and have not really fired of yet. Other lakes would be worth a shot over Leake and Tooms at this point.

Saltwater

• Bream: The bream has not slowed this year and have been caught along most shores in the Derwent and Browns River.

• Flathead: Flathead have been fishing fairly well considering the time of year and weather conditions. Reports of good numbers of size fish and over have been reported. Marion Bay, Norfolk Bay and around Bruny Island have all been fairly reliable.

• Striped Trumpeter: With the closure of the season fast approaching now is the time to get a Stripey fix. The fishing has been good in the shallower areas from down South and all up the east coast. We now stock the popular Vexed Bottom Meat Jig which is proving to be very effective on the stripeys, perfect for a modern twist on bottom fishing.

• Tuna: The odd School Bluefin Tuna are still about around the mouth of Fortescue Bay and Hippolyte Rocks.
