Days will only get longer from here on in... and that can only mean more fishing time!

Despite the cold weather there have been some good catches this week, particularly staff member Jonty's big blue.

Saltwater

Flounder: Anglers have found flounder in very shallow water, with most able to catch bag limits with ease. A few still nights on the way with it getting dark early makes them a fantastic target over the next week.

Sand Whiting: Good numbers and size fish have been caught off Lower Sandy Bay and the channel. A fantastic table fish well worth targeting.

Bream: Both the Huon and Derwent have been fishing well the last few weeks. Fly, Lure and Bait have been very productive. In the Derwent the bream have moved over the mud flats around Bridgewater and in clear deeper water down river. With water temps low the trick is to slow the retrieve.

Tuna: The Bluefin have been wide spread along the East coast the last few weeks. The Tuna have been feeding on large schools of Red Bait and Mackerel. A few larger fish of 80kg plus have been mixed in with the school fish.

Australian Salmon: Salmon are still hanging around, most of the shores in the Derwent River have been productive. The Gillies metal lures in Pilchard and the Clown fish have been deadly.

Striped Trumpeter: The Striped Trumpeter have been fishing well the last week with multiple groups of anglers getting their bag limits fairly easily. The inshore reefs have been very productive.

Calamari: Squid have been going well in the Channel and the East Coast around Maria Island. The deeper water has been holding the larger models. A heavier jig such as the Yamashita Egi Oh Live Deep is a great choice of this application.

Tailor: The Last few weeks have seen the odd report of fish in the Derwent ranging from around 500gr to 1.5kg. Mostly caught as bycatch while cashing Salmon and Trout.

Sea Run Trout: A few trout have been caught in both the Huon and Derwent River, they have still been a little patchy. As the year goes on it should improve.

Freshwater

While the weather has been terrible a few old employees from Spot On the Fishing Connection made a trip to Great Lake to celebrate the winter solstice and have a fish. Joe Mangan managed a nice rainbow on the troll in Swan Bay and Sam Shelley managed a brown from the shore in Todds Corner. Don't let the weather and cold hold you back from trying for the Trout as it can still be rewarding.
