The first thing that typically catches the eye of a true boat lover is the helm. And few things convey more about a vessel's quality and seaworthiness than its steering wheel. The Primus model from Schmitt & Ongaro Marine checks both those boxes and more. Designed for all-day comfort, it's the ideal choice for everything from a commercial crabber to a small inland runabout.
The Primus is exceptionally strong. Manufactured using a unified investment casting, the solid 34cm or 39cm wide 316L stainless steel wheel exceeds ABYC P-22 and ISO 8848 standards. Schmitt & Ongaro Marine is so confident in the wheel it backs it with a lifetime warranty for corrosion and structural integrity.
Visually striking, the Primus is available in polished or powder-coated black stainless steel. Its rim is wider than that of most wheels—28mm—to reduce hand fatigue. Finger grips provide optimal control, especially in wet conditions.
The Primus is offered in three spoke configurations: solid, open slots or with decorative UV-resistant black Santoprene™ inserts. The latter option extends above and below the spokes for vibration reduction and a bespoke appearance. All spoke versions have slightly chamfered edges for a safe, comfortable feel.
Standard on the powder coated models, a popular optional enhancement to the stainless steel Primus is the Control Knob. Mounted on a spoke 19mm back from the rim, it provides a faster spin and it won't interfere when using the steering wheel normally. Glass ball bearings ensure a lifetime of smooth and trouble-free Control Knob operation.
The Primus uses a standard 19mm tapered hub. An optional stainless steel center nut works with all standard marine steering systems.
Schmitt & Ongaro Marine's Primus steering wheel may be customized for OEM use. Options include different powder coat and Santoprene colors, and logos engraved on the Control Knob or center nut.
