Henri-Lloyd #BlueAugust - Turning the Tide on Ocean Plastics Together

by Mark Jardine 11 Aug 2021 14:39 UTC

Our environment and the climate are featuring heavily in the news, and it's clear that the time for action is now with sustainability needing to be part of every step that we take in our lives.

Henri-Lloyd has fully embraced this ethos by striving to source in more sustainable ways with recycled and recyclable materials, whilst working with fabric and yarn suppliers who share these values.

As sailors we have learned to love our ocean, but the statistics are disturbing. More than 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into our oceans every year, making up 80% of all marine debris from service waters to deep-sea sediments.

It is estimated that by 2050 the ocean will contain more plastic by weight than fish. Plastic pollution threatens food safety and quality, human health, coastal tourism, and contributes to climate change.

For the MAV HL Mid Layer range, Henri-Lloyd searched for environmentally friendly materials, and they found Pontetorto, an Italian fabric manufacturer who produce performance materials from recycled plastic bottles (PET).

The range has been incredibly successful, while at the same time a Mav HL Mid Crew gives new purpose to thirteen 1.5 litre PET bottles. Instead of polluting the oceans, the previously single use plastics are recycled into stylish and comfortable technical clothing.

While repurposing PET bottles deals helps recycle plastic, the problem of plastics already in the ocean is there already, so during #BLUEAUGUST Henri-Lloyd is donating 10% of online profits to Ocean Clean Up Charities who are practically involved in reclaiming plastic waste and returning it to the supply chain to be re-purposed.

We are all changing our mindset to be more conscious of the environment around us, this encompasses our behaviour as individuals to the businesses we choose to support.

Chairman Hans Eckerström is deeply passionate about his surroundings and determined that Henri-Lloyd plays its part in sustainability. His philosophy is that we are the guests on this world, and we should treat our host with respect.

We can Turn the Tide on Ocean Plastics Together.
