Do the salmon survey © DPIPWE Fishing

Have you been fishing for salmon escapees? IMAS researchers would like to hear from you...

We need to know more about the impact of salmon escape events. How widely and quickly do the escapees disperse, how long do they survive in the wild, and do they adapt to feeding on natural prey items?

Be a citizen scientist - do the survey to help answer these questions.

January fishing clinics

Looking for an activity the family can do together this summer?

Free fishing clinics are being held at local jetties in January including Georgetown, Clarence Point, Stanley, St Helens, Coles Bay and Hobart. All ages and abilities are welcome. Clinics for community groups can be pre-organised with Fishcare.

New fishers learn basic skills like setting up a rod, casting, how to measure your catch and fish responsibly. Rods and gear are provided.

Summer clinics - dates and details

Look after flathead stocks this summer

Around 184 tonnes or 98% of the total catch of sand flathead are caught by recreational fishers and unfortunately stocks are in decline. Research is under way to better monitor stocks and understand influences on flathead populations.

Flathead is everyone's favourite summer fishing species, so do your bit during the holidays to help stocks recover.

What can recreational fishers do?

  • Only take what you need for a feed
  • NEVER use undersize flathead for bait.
  • Release small flathead so they survive - use a dehooker or wet hands.
  • Target other species such as gurnard, Australian salmon and mullet.Try catching a new species such as yellowtail kingfish or snapper.
  • Spread out your fishing activities. Fish away from popular areas.
