RS Tera Welsh Region Training Weekend at Port Dinorwic Sailing Club

by Alan Knock 9 Mar 2020 13:03 UTC 7-8 March 2020

What, not another windy weekend for winter training? This winter training season has been plagued with a surplus of wind coinciding with each and every training weekend at Port Dinorwic Sailing Club.

The weekend of 7th and 8th of March was no exception and the Welsh Region RS Tera fleet welcomed a few visitors from the North West of England for the second weekend boot camp of the winter with coach Brett Cokayne.

Despite the strong winds, the heroic coaches and sailors managed four separate sailing sessions over the weekend, each seemingly windier than the last. The focus for the weekend was to be boat speed and the conditions were perfect to test the sailors to the limit. The Menai Strait served up varying tidal streams producing both flat water blasting and steep lumpy chop, something for everyone!

Saturday started relatively moderately with high tide giving the on-shore spectators a ringside seat for flat water training right in front of the club. Over the course of the day's two sessions the wind speed ramped up and the tide ebbed, sailors worked hard and by the end of the day there were some very tired bodies at the video debrief in the clubhouse.

On Sunday the wind continued to build and sailors reduced sail size to cope but none were to be defeated! By Sunday afternoon the young sailors were blasting along using all three RS Tera rig sizes (Mini, Sport and Pro) to great effect. Eyes like saucers they came off the water declaring that the best sailing ever! Video proof on the RS Tera PDSC YouTube channel here.

The weekend was the conclusion of the winter training sessions for the Welsh Region RS Teras at PDSC. The club would like to wish the sailors the best of luck at the World Championships in South Africa in April, the European Championships in Germany in July and the UK National Championships in Torquay at the end of August.

Thanks must go to Brett for coaching a great weekend and to PDSC for hosting.
