Garda Trentino Olympic Week: Eurosaf Champions Sailing Cup - Day 2

The second day of competition had sunny skies and lighter winds on Upper Garda for the Garda Trentino Olympic Week, the second leg of the Eurosaf Champions Sailing Cup organised by Fraglia Vela Riva, Lega Navale di Riva, Circolo Vela Arco, Circolo Surf Torbole and Fraglia Vela Malcesine. In keeping with the schedule another three races were completed for the faster classes while two were completed for the others. With three days till the end of the event, the discard was applied to the general standings for the worst race which showed more evidently how things are shaping up in the top positions.
RS:X Windsurf – Circolo Surf Torbole
In the men's windsurf competition Italian Daniele Benedetti dominates. Although he was slightly less brilliant today he managed to hold onto the lead with 4 firsts, a second and a discarded fourth. Hot on his heels is fellow national Mattia Camboni who today took two firsts and a second. With 13 points is Gadorfalvi of Hungary in third place (3-4-3-). In the women's category Meg of France took over the lead, today taking a first and two seconds which were enough to put her 6 points ahead of fellow Hungarian Belbeoch (3-3-4). It was a disappointing day for Cholnoky of Hungary who dropped into third position one point behind second place.
470 M – Lega Navale Italiana, Riva del Garda
Italians Kosuta – Farneti increased their lead today by winning the first race of the day and then the second. Their consistency keeps them well ahead by 14 points over Russians Sheremetev Mikhail and Maxim (6-3). Just one point behind them are Italians Capurro-Puppo who improved on yesterday's performance by taking 6 and 3 today. Its a close race among the crews lying from second to fifth place (2 points dividing them). Eight countries are in the top ten.
470 W – Lega Navale Italiana, Riva del Garda
Slovenians Tina Mrak and Veronika Macarol hold on and in fact increase their lead over their rivals. Identical scores as on the first day (2-1), give them a 12 point advantage over Italians Berta- Paolilo (today 5-3). Climbing into third place is the other Italian crew locals Zorzi-Caruso who today took a first and a fifth bringing them to within two points of second place. They are tied on points with Russians Kirilyuk-Dmitrieva.
Laser Standard (M) – Fraglia Vela Riva
Multi champion Robert Scheidt today redeemed himself by having two partial victories which pushed him into third place 7 points behind the leader, Australian Matt Wear who today had a second and a third. In second place is Bernaz Baptiste of France who was fourth in the first race of the day and first in the second. The standings in this category also have athletes in the top ten from 8 different countries.
Laser Radial (W) – Fraglia Vela Riva
Olympic bronze medallist Evi Van Acker of Belgium takes the lead after a second and a first today. She has a 15 point lead over team-mate Plasschaert who also improved today by delivering a first and a fourth partial. Two points behind in third place is Marie Bolou of France
49er (M) – Circolo Vela Arco
Climbing from third into first place are Jjanuszewski-Nowak with a 1-2-11 which gives them a good lead over Italians Crivelli Visconti- Togni who are in second position. "They resolved the problems they'd had in controlling the boat and with good tactical skill and strategy from the helmsman we are seeing results. The crew have only been together on the 49er for a year." commented Luca De Pedrini, federal coach. Just one point behind the Italians are DelleKarth-resch of Austria. Problems for Ruggero Tita of Trentino who after withdrawing from the first race yesterday, had to withdraw from the first race yet again today after colliding with an opponent right before the first buoy mark. However Tita recovered with a fifth and eighth partial. There was a good performance today from the other Italian crew of Plazzi- Molineris: fourth and first to finish the day with 23.
49er FX(W) – Circolo Vela Arco
Italians Conti-Clapcich continue to lead. Today the had two first partials and a discarded eighth. They have a 12 lead over Gross- Jonsson of Sweden (3-5-2). In third place are Brits Dobson-Ainsworth. Inconsistent results for Spaniards Echegoyen-Betanzos who after two seconds dropped to a 14th which leaves them in fourth place overall.
Nacra 17 – Fraglia Vela Malcesine
Italians Bissaro-Sicouri pulled out all the stops today to take the lead. With three firsts they sent a clear message to their opponents. They have three point lead over New Zealanders Jones-Saunders, who had a false start in the third and last race of the day. Eleven points behind in third place are Spaniards Martinez-Lopez, tied with Bekatorou- Trigkonis of Greece, (they too had a n OCS in the last race).
Paralympic Classes
Conditions were good and steady on the race course at Fraglia Vela Malcesine for the three paralympic classes which saw strong competition from the large number taking part.
Skud 18 – Fraglia Vela Malcesine
The British crew of Rickham-Birrel hold on to the lead in the Skud class, continuing their form from yesterday as today they were once again always first. They have a 9 point lead over Italians Gulandris-Zanetti who today took a sixth and a second and are tied with Canadians McRoberts-Gay (2-5).
2.4mT – Fraglia Vela Malcesine
Italian Antonio Squizzato increases his lead to 7 points after three firsts and a second. Andarias of Spain is second (3-4). Third is Italian Nicola Redavid who repeated his performance of yesterday with a 2-5.
Sonar – Fraglia Vela Malcesine
Remaining in first place are Germans Bauer-Brietzke-Krauss showing steady form with a 3-1. In second place are Spaniards Llobet-Alvarez-Gimeno who performed well today with a first and a second. Third are Italians D'Agaro- Solazzo-Pira (2-3).
