The Nore Race in the Thames Estuary will be on Saturday 30th June, starting and finishing at Southend Pier. This sailing event has been taking place every year for over 80 years except for the war years and attracts amateur sailors from all over the east of England.
Benfleet Yacht Club organises the event. Commodore Steve Bibby reports: "We expect over 140 boats to enter which makes it one of the premier events in the Thames Estuary. We welcome entries from local sailors and entry forms are available from local sailing clubs or can be downloaded from www.benfleetyachtclub.org
We keep the entry fee low at £15 and aim to just break even thanks to the continued sponsorship of Dauntless Boat Yard.
Dinghies will start at 1:30 pm and cruising yachts at 1:40pm which should be a fantastic public spectacle from the pier. Photographers with long focus lenses should get some great pictures.
It is important that skippers take full responsibility and prepare their boats and crew for the sailing conditions, with adequate insurance. The Nore Race is 'serious fun'; we all aim to have a good time but please sail safely."
