IOS Round the Island Race at Isle Of Sheppey Sailing Club

by James Bell 10 Sep 2011 08:28 UTC 3 September 2011

The Isle of Sheppey Sailing Club's annual race around the island once again proved to be a highly popular and successful event with 130 boats taking part on Saturday 3rd September 2011.

Weather conditions were ideal with sunshine and a moderate breeze. The race, now in its 53rd year, is the longest of its type in Europe at nearly 40 miles depending on wind and tides.

The race starts and finishes at Sheerness and is a clockwise circumnavigation of the island. Firstly by sea to Leysdown and around the NE tip of the Island, Shellness, before heading into the Swale estuary. The Swale gradually narrows into the river, with the lifting road bridge at Kingsferry acting as an obstacle at its narrowest point. Larger dinghies and multihulls have to be stopped, heeled over and walked under the inner span of the bridge. The course continues up the Swale, through the ancient port of Queenborough and into the mouth of the Medway, before finally rounding Garrison Point to the open sea and the short distance back to the Club.

Overall winner was Aaron Young and Rob Butterfield sailing a Torando catamaran, completing the course in 2 hours and 23 minutes. They now join a small but exclusive group of sailors to have won the event 3 times.

First sailboarder was David Clay, completing the course in 4 hours 11 minutes.

First local boat to finish and on handicap was Dan Norman and Chris Goymer sailing a Dart 18.

Full results and further information about the race are available on the Club's website at www.iossc.org.uk
