Royal Mersey Yacht Club Regatta

by G Dewar 22 Jun 2004 07:13 UTC 19 June 2004

A NW5/6 heralded the start of the Mersey River Festival at Tranmere for the for the RMYC's annual Regatta. Fortunatly there was enough West in the wind to prevent rollers coming directly down from the river mouth.

The traditional classes ( Mylnes, 1/2 Raters, Hilbres, Operas and Stars)rushed away on a quartering run with the offshore classes following. The "Traditionals",unable to reef, had a tough time of it but all managed to complete their course. The "Offshores" sported a variety of sail arrangements more suitable to the elements and fared accordingly to the suitability of their helms choice. Both classes sailed the same course and it should be noted that 1st and 2nd in class 2 would have been 2nd and 3rd in class 1 had they been combined!
